Them toothie critters
Indiana is a surprisingly good state to fish for walleye. Most of Indiana's larger Lakes have walleye, and several smaller lakes do as well. Spring is coming and there is no better time to shake off the cobwebs and fill a limit of tasty walleye fillets.
Walleye are a peculiar species. And in our local impoundments they differ quite a bit from their northern counter parts. Though walleye fishing though out the year demands a substantial amount of equipment and varied tackle and tactics, early spring brings the easiest, and cheapest way to catch them. 90% of early season fishing (ice out through mid may), requires a small selection of assorted color jigs and a lot of fat worms (some days 6 dozen or more).
Some days colors wont matter. Then some days its the difference between catching or bird watching. Stream half a night crawler, find the right location, and fish on.
Some will cast and retrieve along the bottom. Some snap and fish vertical. I long line troll or drag jigs, using medium to light rods, and lighter lines. Rigs similar to crappie fishing is all you will need.
In the next few weeks i will post several tips and tricks to clue in on fish locations, and timing. I will also discuss jig and line selection along with how we drag jigs with multiple rod spreads to increase the odds of success. So be sure to check back in during the next few weeks as we ready for boatable waters.
