Been doing winter fishing for 20 years. They pack into places they van survive. It is what makes smallmouth so susceptible to river otter predation. In the summer and spring they spread out. If you aren't getting them, I suggest leaving the fly rod at home and double or triple your cast distances otherwise you spook the big ones. Good article.
Awesome article. Thank you! Moving from Minnesota to Indiana I've definitely noticed a difference in the public land management and general care for natural areas. Can you recommend some organizations to join to help support change?
Connor, thanks for the feedback. Indiana is fairly limited when it comes to active organizations dealing with public access and habitat improvement. I’m currently on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Wildlife Federation (https://www.indianawildlife.org/) and I am going to do my best to steer the organization toward lobbying for greater public access and habitat improvement. Also, check out the Indiana chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (https://www.backcountryhunters.org/indiana), they're interested and active on these issues. But generally, for the most part, our streams are ignored. It’s time for that to change. Please join an organization and express your concerns. In the meantime don’t hesitate to contact me (dean.shadley@sporting-report.com), I’m always glad to help.
